Fire is possibly the most feared and destructive thing that could happen in and around your home. Every year, house fires and bushfires destroy homes and lives across the country. Having the ability to prevent and put out fires is an important part of home safety for most Australians. Yet, too many people neglect their fire safety appliances and systems, only to find that they don't work effectively or at all when they're needed.
If you've neglected your fire safety equipment in recent years, then it's important to have them inspected and serviced. Here are two life-saving fire safety appliances that you should have serviced as soon as possible.
1. Your fire extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are a highly effective way to rapidly deal with a fire that's broken out on the inside or outside of your home. They've proven themselves time and time again as an invaluable way to quickly prevent a fire from spreading and causing destruction, injury and death.
However, without the right maintenance on a regular basis, your fire extinguisher may fail to operate when you attempt to use it. An annual inspection and service by a qualified fire extinguisher contractor will ensure that its mechanisms are functioning correctly, the internal pressure is at the right level and that the extinguisher hasn't passed its used by date.
2. Your smoke detectors
By law, every Australian home must be fitted with ceiling mounted smoke detectors in appropriate positions and in adequate numbers throughout the dwelling. Smoke detectors save lives and provide the early warning and ability to fight a fire or flee safely. It's an unfortunate fact that most housefire deaths each year occur in homes with faulty or absent smoke detectors.
You should have your smoke detectors checked by an expert at least once a year to ensure they work correctly. If necessary, the fire safety contractor will repair or replace faulty or damaged smoke detectors for you. As well as these annual checks, you should also check them yourself at least once a month to make sure the batteries aren't depleted.
Like any appliances within the home, fire safety equipment will last longer and perform more effectively if they're taken care of properly. Unlike most other appliances, such as your washing machine or fridge, the price you pay for neglecting your fire safety equipment may be the life of your family or your own life. Contact your local fire safety contractor to book your service appointment as soon as possible.

When I decided to become a freelance designer, I decided I would work from home. I was sick and tired of being in an office all day and to be honest, some of my workmates were pretty annoying. However, I did not consider that I might have to make some changes to my home in order to make it suitable. On the first day of my new life working from home, I realised I would need much more natural light, so I had new windows installed. I then realised that I would need a larger work table to work on my cut out designs. In the end, I made hundreds of changes and I learnt an awful lot about home improvement.
