Three Things To Consider When Working With Cabinet Makers

Home & Garden Blog

Brand new cabinets are a great way to revitalise your home, providing you with a bold new look alongside new storage space. Working with a cabinet maker to get cabinets made is a really personal way to do this, but as described below, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Decide On The Structure Of Your Cabinets

You might be looking for new kitchen cabinets, or you may want a cabinet for your bedroom or a TV cabinet. Whatever the case, it's important to tell your cabinet maker how many cabinets and shelves you need and what their configuration will be. Work out how much stuff you need to put in your new cabinets and what your perfect storage solution would look like. Don't forget to measure your home and find out how much space you have, though some cabinet makers will want to see the space for themselves before you get started.

Think About Materials

Good cabinet makers will be able to give you advice and suggestions on what type of material would work well for your new cabinets, in terms of what will look good and what will last a long time. They should also be able to give tips about how to care for specific materials. Look at samples of different types of wood, and decide what suits your budget and also your vision of how your cabinets will look. Think about how you want your space to look — do you want lighter woods for a modern look or darker woods for a traditional look? If you aren't sure, ask your cabinet maker for help, but it's best to have a general idea of the look you want.

Make A List Of Little Details

When you've decided what your cabinets will look like and what they will be made of, you will need to make some smaller decisions. For example, what hardware do you want on your cabinets? Your cabinet maker will be able to help you choose something that looks great. You will also need to decide about the inside of the cabinets and choose whether you want things like adjustable shelving to store your essentials. You can ask cabinet makers if they would recommend making any other changes or whether there is any other input they need.

If you work with your cabinet maker to choose materials, structure and details, you can ensure you end up with cabinets that are perfect for you. If you are not sure about an aspect of your cabinets, speak to a cabinet maker for help and advice.

Turning Your Home into Your Workplace

When I decided to become a freelance designer, I decided I would work from home. I was sick and tired of being in an office all day and to be honest, some of my workmates were pretty annoying. However, I did not consider that I might have to make some changes to my home in order to make it suitable. On the first day of my new life working from home, I realised I would need much more natural light, so I had new windows installed. I then realised that I would need a larger work table to work on my cut out designs. In the end, I made hundreds of changes and I learnt an awful lot about home improvement.
